The tenor Thomas Piffka studied at the Cologne Conservatory, where Josef Metternich was one of his teachers. Today he himself is a professor at this conservatory.

Piffka is a regular guest at many famous national and international opera houses, such as the Staatsoper in Berlin, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Salzburg Festival and the Wiener Festwochen, the opera houses in Lyon, Dijon, Malmö and Gothenburg, the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, the Palm Beach Opera, in Bern, Basel, St. Gallen, Graz and St. Petersburg, at the Cologne Opera, in Weimar, Leipzig and at the Komische Oper in Berlin, at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and at the International May Festival, at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, in Essen, Dortmund and Kassel, at the Volksoper in Vienna, the Budapest State Opera and in Luxembourg.

In 2009 Piffka made his successful debut as Alwa|Lulu at the Opera in Lyon, followed by further engagements in the same role at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Vienna, and in a new production under the baton of Marc Albrecht at the Salzburg Festival, which is available on DVD. In the same season he also appeared as Erik|The Flying Dutchman, Florestan|Fidelio, Ismaele|Nabucco, Don José|Carmen.

This was followed by Edwin|Die Csardasfürstin and Tamino|Die Zauberflöte in Essen, Pinkerton|Madama Butterfly in Malmö, Kalaf (Busoni) at the Opera in Dijon, Erik at the Opera House Cagliari and at the opening of the International May Festival in Wiesbaden he made his debut as Claire Quilty in Shchedrin’s Lolita.

In 2011/2012 Piffka was Florestan at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Hoffmann|Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Essen, Guido Bardi|A Florentine Tragedy in Lyon; he also sang Alwa in a new production of Andrea Breth conducted by Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera and Erik at the Cologne Opera.

In the 2012/2013 season, Piffka returned to Essen as Hoffmann, Tamino and Pinkerton, sang the Father in the world premiere of Der Sandmann at the Theater Basel, appeared as Paolo|Fosca in Giessen and as Bacchus|Ariadne auf Naxos at the Opera Budapest.

In the following years he sang Hauptmann|Wozzeck at the Cologne Opera and Erik in Serbia with the Belgrade Philharmonic. He was also Kaiser|Die Frau ohne Schatten in Wiesbaden, Count Elemer|Arabella at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Quint|The Turn of the Screw in Wiesbaden, Inquisitor|Il prigioniero in Cologne.

In 2016 he appeared for the first time as Stolzing|Meistersinger in Chemnitz; he was followed by René|Der Graf von Luxemburg in Wiesbaden, Der Vater|Der Sandmann at the Frankfurt Opera and Hauptmann|Wozzeck in Amsterdam. Most recently he could be heard as Aegisth|Elektra and Melot in Lyon, as Alwa at the Opera of Rome, as Aegisth with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and as Gregor|Makropulos at the Bonn Opera.
